60 Songs That Explain the 90’s

Book cover for 60 Songs that Explain the 90's by Rob Harvilla

Rob Harvilla‘s 60 Songs that Explain the 90’s is a podcast and new companion book that I highly recommend checking out. My wife Sam and I recently finished the audiobook and we agree that it was a delightful ride the whole way through.

This may be skewed partly by the fact that we grew up during the 90’s and have a special attachment to a lot of the music that was being played at the time. Regardless, if you have any interest in music and pop culture, I think you’d enjoy this content as it is just plain fun, well-written, and often funny. I really love the way that Rob describes people and music, and the way he recounts events. It feels like stream-of-consciousness meandering around a theme with an entertaining and engaging style.

Each podcast episode starts with a written portion followed by a conversational interview, while the book is comprised entirely of the written material. The podcast does not depend on the order, so pick an episode that speaks to you. I particularly enjoyed the episode covering They Might Be Giants, if you are looking for a recommendation—but in my experience you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

If you go for the book, definitely take it in on audiobook since the author’s delivery really adds a lot to the experience here.
